Roy Holtz Roy Holtz

The first Yank to enter enemy territory near the end of WWI riding a Harley-Davidson.

Hailing from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Corporal Roy Holtz was the first Yank to enter enemy territory at the end of World War I. On November 8, 1918, Holtz left a forward position in northern Belgium with his captain in his sidecar. Disoriented by a heavy rain, the two rode into Germany and were captured when they stopped at a farmhouse to ask directions. Holtz spoke fluent German and hit it off with his captors, who treated him to shots of vodka. When the armistice was declared on the morning of November 11, Holtz and his captain were set free. Thus, a Harley-Davidson entered Germany 72 hours in advance of the end of the war!
